The ARJE brings together Reform Jewish educational leaders who aspire to live out their sacred calling with passion, dedication, and a commitment to Jewish values and ideals. The ARJE’s members inspire excellence through the work of Jewish teaching and learning in a variety of educational settings. With more than 800 members throughout the world, ARJE reflects the commitment, professionalism and diversity of today’s Jewish educators who enrich lives by challenging minds, nurturing souls, and strengthening Jewish communities. Members serve in leadership positions in a variety of positions and settings including congregations, camps, day schools, publishing, academia, and communal agencies, working to strengthen Reform Jewish education.

Position Summary: The ARJE seeks its new chief executive to serve as the Executive Director and lead the vision and mission of the organization in sacred partnership with the Board of Trustees. The ideal start date will be January 2022, recognizing flexibility in timing for the right candidate. The Executive Director will be both the outward face of the organization and the leader of all internal management and operations. This position is full-time, remote, and flexible on hours, scheduling, and geographic location. The ARJE is committed to finding a new visionary Executive Director who will have their hand on the pulse of trends and developments in the field of Reform Jewish education, create strategic partnerships, identify opportunities to grow, and deeply impact the ARJE’s strategic planning. The ARJE seeks a strategic thinker with excellent communication skills, good sense of humor, high level of organization, and the skills to serve as the voice of the ARJE within and beyond the Reform Movement.

Areas of Responsibilities (not listed in order of priority) 

  • Strategic Vision and Voice
    • In partnership with the Board of Trustees, develop and implement a long-term strategic process to execute goals aligned with the mission and vision of the ARJE
    • Serve as the voice and face of the organization with a robust public presence in person and online 
  • Board Partnership 
    • Work with the Board President, the Va’ad (the Executive Committee), and the Board of Trustees to ensure the success of the Board and leadership 
    • Engage lay leaders to play an active role in attracting, retaining, and developing future members and leaders 
    • Inform the Board regularly of budgeting and internal organization matters, including relevant staffing, funding, and program successes, challenges, and priorities 
    • Oversee the administration of Board committees with the Board President and ensure that efforts are well-organized and appropriately funded and staffed 
    • Other responsibilities as determined by the Board 
  • Relationships with Members
    • Cultivate excellent relationships with members 
    • Create a meaningful presence and have an active voice with members through various platforms (i.e. social media, newsletters, etc.) 
    • Support and provide ongoing resources (salary surveys, recommended benefits packages, mentoring opportunities, etc.) to assist members as professional Jewish educators 
  • Organizational Leadership
    • Supervise, manage, and mentor ARJE staff and outside consultants/vendors, with clear communications and expectations to ensure a high-performing remote work culture 
    • Actively promote the internal and external presence of the ARJE to advocate for and demonstrate the voice of Reform Jewish education and all types of educators 
    • Develop and lead all programming, marketing, budgeting, fund development, digital and email communications, and operations of the organization 
    • Guide all aspects of external communications including improving website functionality and presence, social media, brand consistency, and external relations 
    • Lead and oversee effective systems to track progress toward goals based on measurable outcomes, data-driven analytics, and financial projections, and regularly evaluate program components to measure outcomes 
  • Fiscal Management and Fund Development
    • Build and monitor annual budgeting process 
    • With Finance Committee, set and manage toward financially viable budget goals 
    • Oversee both budget and development staff to ensure that the organization is financially viable and appropriate budget goals are set and met 
    • With development professional and in partnership with Development Committee, steward the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of organizational, corporate, individual, and foundation donor prospects including grant opportunities 
  • Programming and Operations Management
    • Identify and implement cost-effective ways to deliver both in person (Annual Gathering) and online professional development opportunities, and state-of-the-art programs to members 
    • Oversee Annual Gathering activities and delegate responsibilities efficiently to ensure successful planning, marketing, and on-site management 
    • Oversee updating of membership database, applications, and renewals, and updating and managing ongoing programming calendar 
    • Supervise the regular maintenance of the job placement listings on the ARJE website and other educational and professional learning opportunities 
    • Ensure smooth relationships with vendors and third parties 
  • Relationships with Outside Organizations
    • Represent the ARJE within and beyond the Reform Movement
    • Build partnerships with outside organizations 
    • Serve as the voice of Reform Jewish education 
    • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities 

Key Credentials and Personal Qualities 

  • Master's Degree in Jewish Education or Nonprofit Management, or its equivalent 
  • 5-10 years successful senior leadership and management experience at a Jewish organization 
  • Demonstrated passion for the ARJE mission 
  • Inspiring, experienced, responsive, and effective leader and communicator with excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills 
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, and accounting 
  • Experience supervising, motivating, and mentoring staff 
  • Experience in cultivating relationships and partnerships 
  • A passion for cultivating relationships in order to raise funds 
  • Proven commitment to results; “can-do" mindset with an emphasis on accountability 
  • Experience with change management 
  • Experience working with lay leaders 
  • Strong, motivational leadership and management experience 
  • Ability to travel at least quarterly throughout the year 
  • Sense of humor, integrity, and an impeccable work ethic
