As we plan for ARJE27, our annual gathering, I have been thinking a lot about our conference theme of Mattering. “Mattering” is so much more than just “belonging.” Belonging is feeling welcome, whereas mattering recognizes the importance of each unique individual. As educators, when we create spaces where every individual matters, we are affirming that every person is deeply valued and an important part of our community.
This week we will enter into the High Holy days, a time of deep introspection and reflection. We will explore how we showed up for each other and ask how we can be a better version of ourselves. One liturgical theme is the Book of Life, where each of us, we pray, will be inscribed and remembered by name. Quite literally, we are seen, accounted for and individually recognized. This is mattering in its purest form. The blasts of the shofar wakes us from complacency and remind us to stay alert and really notice the world around us, including those entrusted in our care.
We are all partners in the work of creation and of creating spaces where every individual matters. You do this by noticing, naming and valuing each learner. This year, may you receive what you give to others – to be remembered and valued for consistently helping others matter.
May 5787 be a good year for us all.
